GENESIS HACKATHONS

Teams made up of members of MNOs, Vendors or mixed teams interested in this initiative must pay an entry fee for their companies to be registered and to attend. Vendors who are participating in The Innovators don’t pay anything.

Participating teams can have as many teams as they like. They must provide a name for their teams.

The Registration phase of the Genesis Hackathons 2023 is very simple. Here are the steps:

  • Email HQ@rocco.group to be registered.
  • Teams will pay a registration fee.
  • Registration is open from Jan. 19th.
  • The Challenge Webinar will be held on 30th March to understand the challenge which participants have to try to solve.
  • After the presentation of the challenges, teams can decide to register and pay the fee. Anyone interested can register by writing to HQ@rocco.group.

Who can participate in the Genesis Hackathon?

Any MNO, vendor, or mixed team made up of members of both MNOs and vendors who want to challenge themselves and be recognised for their innovative thinking and quick development to solve industry needs. To participate, teams must have knowledge of Roaming or Messaging at a technical, operational and commercial level. Teams can be made up of members from different departments within the same company or can work in more than one company.

On the 30th March will be held the Challenge Introduction Webinar. Anyone interested can register for the webinar by writing to HQ@rocco.group. After the presentation of the challenges, teams can decide to register and pay the fee.

The company who is raising the Challenge will describe what is required for the participating teams to do.

The teams will then have three weeks to deliver against the Challenge.

On the 30th March following the Challenge Introduction Webinar the Hackathon begins and runs until April 21st.

The participating teams have three weeks to deliver a solution to the Challenge.

By April 21st all the solutions must be submitted and presented to ROCCO in the form of a 15-minute video presentation. Other Documentation may also be submitted which together meet the requirements of the challenges.

Blablacar and Ooredoo will then consider which solutions should be shortlisted. By April 25th the shortlisted teams will be announced.

The shorlisted solutions will be presented at GENESIS from May 24th to 25th 2023.

A panel of expert judges with 1st-hand experience of the challenges will rate the solutions. After their verdict, the audience at Genesis will also have a chance to rate the innovation.

The scores will be collected and the winners will be announced at the Visionaries Gala on May 25th.

While all the solutions will be acknowledged for their value, the Top 2 solutions (one for Roaming & one for Messaging) will be announced at the Visionaries Gala on May 25th. The teams involved will receive awards for their solutions.

This approach will identify the most dynamic teams in our industry who can respond to challenges in a short time and allow us to see which of them are really working on R&D and making a difference in the industry.

About The Genesis Hackathon

What is the Genesis Hackathon about?

The Hackathon is a new and revolutionary competition in our industry in which the participating companies come up in a short time (three weeks) with new and original ideas/products/ services/solutions to solve specific challenges announced in March.

These challenges will be presented by recognised stakeholders (MNOs or Enterprises) in their respective categories: Roaming & Messaging on 30th March. The challenges are real industry issues/cases to which several companies are looking for a solution. Participants will have to develop a product/service/ solution that solves the challenges in an original way.

How many categories are in the Genesis Hackathon?

There are two categories: Roaming and Messaging. The teams can participate in one or both.

Who can participate in the Genesis Hackathon?

Any team made up of members of MNOs, Vendors or mixed teams who want to challenge themselves and be recognised for their innovative thinking and quick development to solve industry needs. To participate, teams must have knowledge of Roaming or Messaging at a technical, operational and commercial level. Teams can be made up of members from different departments within the same company or can work in more than one company.

What do I get for participating?

Multiple stages of visibility and promotion on social networks, our website, and our newsletter.
For those selected by the Stakeholders (those MNOs and Enterprises that present the problems to be solved): promotion and time to present their solution at our Genesis event.

Possibility to receive an award as the best solution in the different Hackathon categories at the Genesis Visionaries Gala 25th May in Lisbon.

How are the rankings and winners of the Genesis Hackathon decided?

The Hackathon Stakeholders who present the challenges, the panel of judges and the Genesis audience will decide which solutions are the ones that best suit and solve the challenges raised. The winners will be the ones who manage to solve the problem most innovatively and efficiently. There will be two winners, one per category: Roaming and Messaging.

Programmers like a typical Hackathon?

The Genesis Hackathon is more about an ensemble approach. Strategists, technicians and product managers will present the solution, but the finished product is not required to be presented.

Can I present in both Hackathons?

Yes.

Does the solution have to be an original idea?

The Hackathons expect to engage teams made up of members of MNOs, Vendors or mixed teams to respond to major industry issues. The point is to come up with a fresh solution with an open-minded approach.

What if my Solution doesn’t win?

The challenges will be difficult, but we need to challenge ourselves. The stakeholders and wider industry will applaud any company who comes up with a solution, even if it doesn’t win. Several solutions may be adopted by the wider industry if they really respond to the challenge in a strong way. The Hackathon is intended to stimulate innovation and there will likely be no ideas which are not well received to these important challenges.
